Everything was going well and we were really enjoying ourselves (despite my horrendous wipe out) and then we realized that we didn't know exactly which direction we were going and that we should head home. I thought we were near the lake we had been on before, so we followed a little trail in that direction. We made it onto a lake, but it was so foggy we had no idea if we were on the right one! The fog was really disorienting and it took a while for Trav to convince me we were where we wanted to be. Three and a half hours after leaving the apartment, we finally made it to the end of our route. Whew!
I'm pretty sure this was our route. The distance calculator says we skiied 8 miles! |
Be prepared
Leave word of your route
Be weather-wise
Be equipped for bad weather and frost
Learn from the locals
Use a map and compass
Do not go solo
Turn back in time - sensible retreat is no disgrace
Conserve energy and build a snow shelter if necessary

So it turns out it's NOT a helmet you need, it's a compass or a map, perhaps?
